Nephrotic Syndrome


Abstract
A follow up study for 101 patients with nephrotic syndrome was carried out between 1959 and 1970 at the Department of Pediatrics National Medical Center.
The following results were obtained
1) Age and sex incidences: 86% were developed between 2 years and 10 years and no patient was developed under 1 year of age. Male to female ratio was 3:1
2) Seasonal incidence: 67% were developed during spring and winter.
3) Edema and oliguria were chief complaints in 99% of cases.
4) Serum total protein was ranged from 3~4gm% in 72%, albumin below 1.5gm% in 62% and alpha 2 globulin from 1.0 to 1.5gm% in 35% of cases.
Total cholesterol was ranged from 300 to 500mg% in 30% of cases.
Urine protein in 24 hours was ranged between 0.5 and 10gm.
5) Among 31 patients with complication, urinary tract infection cause by E. Coli were 10 patients of highest incidence and the next was pulmonary tuberculosis in 9 patients.
6) In cases with increased creatinine and hypertension, mortality rate was high and remission rate was decreased with steroid therapy.
7) Among the steroid resistant group, immunosuppressive agents were tried in 14 patients. 4 patients showed complete remission and 2 patients showed improvement.
8) Mortality rate was 10%, among them 7 cases were studied with necropsy.
